FAQ

Why are so few independent films ever distributed?

Indie filmmakers often assume that distributors will pick up their films.

They believe distributors will pick up their films because they know the public will love their work.

But, it is very rare that this happens. Distributors often use independent filmmakers.

They employ tactics like delaying a movie's release until after awards season has ended.

They also delay the release date for a low-budget film until the summer blockbuster movie season has begun.

Distributors also try to keep films away from audiences until they've already spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, popcorn, or candy.

They don't want these profits to be lost.

Are foreign sales more lucrative than domestic ones for Hollywood?

Yes, but it is only slightly. In 2017, foreign revenues accounted for about 17% of total revenue. 83% of domestic revenues were generated in 2017.

More than half of the world’s population lives in foreign markets.

This means that many people, even those who don't watch movies at home, will still want to see yours.

Hollywood became famous because of its fame.

It was easy. They took risks and did something different to make it popular. They made films that would last a lifetime.

They also had the courage and vision to try new ideas.

Why is Hollywood so famous?

D.W. Griffith created the first movie industry in California in 1887. It was named for Los Angeles, which was at the time called "Hollywood."

Because it was so exciting to visit, the name stuck. People came from all parts of the country to see what was going on there.

Hollywood is still a big part of our culture. We have movies. There are also music videos. Commercials. These are all known as Hollywood.
